For a few moments, my breathing paused, and something shifted within. As the sun’s rays tore through the clouds it was hiding behind, so did I tear through. A powerful expansion of the self.
I took a deep breath and suddenly experienced the rock as myself. I then took a slower, deeper breath, and the trees became a part of me. Each branch my hand, and each leaf my eye. I took a longer, deeper breath, and the worm crawling in the soil tickled, the ants marching in file caressed.
A strange feeling, pleasantly encompassing. An expansion of the senses. The deeper I breathed, the more I became one with everything around. I was no longer worried about a thousand things, trivial as they truly were. Free from pain and from agony, I’m no longer a puppet but a master of the senses.
Then it happened. I felt the hunger of the sparrow on the branch — the worm’s fear of being crushed — the weariness in the legs of a thousand ants — the constant pricking mother earth endures as roots go deep. Their pain has now become mine. It multiplied, and grew, and grew. The joy of expansion, filled with pain. Pain not of suffering, but of delight. The delight of life’s zillion expressions and possibilities. I do not suffer, I endure, like a mother during childbirth, like cosmic clouds during star birth. Pain on a cosmic scale, but bliss on a much larger scale.
